TARGETTI lights with FOHO PRO the Russian Pavillon at the Architecture Biennale in Venice
This year the Russian Pavilion presents an exciting project Workshop Russia. For nine weeks the Pavilion is transformed into an architectural studio.
Workshop Russia offers a series of practical seminars (workshops) for Russian students and young architects. Nine internationally acclaimed architects are each moderate one workshop. The workshops last one week. In all, nine workshops will be conducted, each engaging ten participants who will explore and resolve one of several conceptual projects under the guidance of a world-class professional.
In this way project reflects the curator’s view of the Biennale more as a medium for discussion, learning and exchange of ideas among professionals than as a venue for exhibition.
It was important that preparations for the Biennale be imbued with national interest and excitement. For this reason we conducted a nationwide competition on the theme Problem and Solution. Two hundred and thirty young architects from 43 Russian cities and towns from Vladivostock to Krasnodar submitted projects and portfolios via the Internet to a jury of seven prominent architects who selected 90 participants. The remaining 10, each a group leader and assistant to the moderator were named by Russian curator.
Themes for the workshops address real-life problems facing our nation while simultaneously speaking to the general challenges of contemporary architecture and urbanism. Specific project assignments within the framework of each theme will be determined by our workshop moderators.
The three halls of the pavilion help structure the Workshop process. The first hall – reception – offers general information about our project. The central hall is heart and soul of Workshop Russia - studio and meeting rooms. Here visitors encounter Workshop participants, become acquainted with works in progress and projects from earlier workshops, take part in discussions and imbibe the creative atmosphere of the studio. The office, located in the third hall, is used exclusively for students’ project work; it is closed to visitors. Final works from each seminar form the exposition of the pavilion, gradually building toward completion at the end of the Biennale. A catalogue of projects will be published at the conclusion of Workshop Russia.
