WORKSHOP NIGHT LANDSCAPE with Louis Clair APRIL, 23rd - 26th 2003
Workshop presentation and aim Light has a fundamental role for the urban environment because it assures visibility and so the use of the place, also during the night. However, to think to light only from a functional point of view, is a big limit. The most recent researches verify that light is fundamental to communicate the identity of the night urban context, an identity that may be lived, not only recognized. Light is a real communication tool able to communicate hierarchies, activities and roads, crating a "mental map" able to help people to read and to interpret the city, by day and by night. The Workshop Night Landscape is aimed to provide participants with the right method to develop a lighting concept for a natural area included in a urban space. The workshop strives to show to participants how the landscape is in relation, day and night, with the city and to teach the method to analyse a natural space to create an original "Nightscape".
The selected place is an area of the Park of the Cascine, the biggest and most famous park in Florence. This area was selected in collaboration with the Environment and Tourism Councillorship which are developing a project to increase the perception and the visibility of the park. A final presentation will be organized to present the different lighting concepts to the local authorities.

Teacher Louis CLAIR, raised in the show world, followed technical studies, took a direction towards industry and became a technico-commercial engineer. After several experiences in cinema’s field, for stage and festive lighting for the municipality’s service and in the lighting market, he opened «Light Cibles» in 1983. «Light Cibles» is the first independent lighting engineering and lighting design office, and participated in the expansion of European big factories of lighting material as a marketing consultant in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the Rheinland, Austria... He developed at the same time in France an activity of independent lighting designer. Since that date, he participated to several projects of lighting design and became rapidly one of the first international specialists in this field. These realizations, in interior lighting and in exterior lighting, are remarked as much for their aspect very cinematographic of lights and shadows as their respect to the architecture and the symbols they have. Between his numerous projects we remind : Mont Saint Michel, Parc de La Villette (Paris), Jardin Atlantique (Paris), Pont Charles De Gaulle (Paris), Jardin Botanique (Singapore), Ponts sur la Singapore River (Singapore), Istana Park (Singapore), Gare Montparnasse (Paris), Aéroport Charles De Gaulle terminal 2F and IIC (Paris), Le Grande Arche (Paris), Rotonde Ledoux (Paris), Eglise Saint Eustache (Paris), Tour Moretti (Paris), Eglise Saint Vincent de Paul (Paris), Basilique Saint Rémi (Reims),...
Topics To project the lighting concepts for a natural area included in a urban space. The selected place to develop the workshop is the Park of the Cascine, the biggest and most famous park in Florence.
Park's history The first nucleus of the property was bought by Duke Alessandro around 1550, and was then expanded by Cosimo I dé Medici. 'Cascine' means 'farms', and the name of today's park is due to the presence, in the past, of cattle farms. The only actual building was a 'hunting house', built by G. Manetti in 1786, where the family spent their hunting holidays. In the 19th century, thanks to Duchess Elisa, the park was opened to the public. Gates and accesses were widened and improved, and an avenue from the park to the river was built. At the time it looked more like a woodland, with some garden areas.
Park of the Cascine Actually the park is opened to the public and some sport facilities have been built together entertaining public places. The borough of Florence strives to improve the perception of the place, the access and the possibility to organize communication initiatives.

The number of participants is limited to assure to each of them to be completely involved in the workshop and to have a direct comparison with the teacher.
