Lighting Academy: here is the 2009 program of courses!

High level teachers, prestigious international collaborations and a travelling soul. Lighting Academy program 2009 is full of surprises and rich of innovation.

Culture of light is growing everyday so to generate a higher and demanding specialization. To answer to this trend, this year we decide to take a different road in comparison to the usual one and focus our effort on advanced workshops, in collaboration with great lighting designers.

Our workshops, as tradition, are based on tutors very well prepared and of professional level, far away from an education based on “teachers” from a commercial side.

The big news is that for the first year, Lighting Academy will be travelling, getting closer to the reality of the case-study. A good design is always based, in fact, on seeing the place and understanding its atmosphere, its vibe, its culture.

The first workshop Embracing the city - A lighting strategy for Rhodes harbour, will be held from 11th to 15th of March 2009 in Rhodes, in Greece, in collaboration with the City of Rhodes and under the expert guidance of the Portuguese lighting designer Maria João Pinto-Coelho (www.lightmotif.pt). The case study is the complex relation between historical city centre and historic and new harbour, based on the renewal project of the harbour area and of the coastline by the City of Rhodes.

For participants it is a great opportunity to be immerse in the reality of this wonderful island of Mediterranean sea, learning about its history and culture as bases for a future development.

A new collaboration is born in 2009 between Lighting Academy and the Parson School of New York (www2.parsons.edu/sce/mfald/welcome.php), with the well-known lighting designer Derek Porter as director. We are really pleased to announce this collaboration, because Parson School is one of the most prestigious school, teaching lighting design since 1970. This collaboration is thought to be durable and continuous through organization of events and conferences.

The event that starts this new “friendship” is the Florence based workshop Light-in Florence - Innovative light for an historical soul, scheduled from 24th to 29th  May 2009.

The workshop is organized for the best students of Parson School, but it is open also to other participants, selected on curriculum vitae. The chosen case study - very interesting, particularly for North American students - will be the historical city centre of Florence, with all its different areas and “souls”. Tutors will be Derek Porter and Emanuela Pulvirenti (www.studiotriskeles.it), enthusiastic Italian lighting designer specialized on historical city centre.
