The 34-year-old Japanese artist, Shinji Yamamoto, author of "Quadratus" is the winner of the TARGETTI ART LIGHT AWARD. Second was Attilio Tono, 23 years old, with "Stimolazione materica". The third prize was awarded to the group Ferrario Freres, a group of Milanese artists, for "Narkyssos - Good vibration".
The prize-giving ceremony was held at ArteFiera in Bologna on 28.1.2000, in the large space designed by Studio Cerri & Associati reserved for the Targetti Art Light Collection in the stand dedicated to sculpture.
The prizes (6000, 3000, and 1500 Euros) were the result of a careful selection first among the 180 projects received, and then among 10 works carried out from the projects. The artists that reached the final selection were: Shinji Yamamoto, Laura Viale, Attilio Tono, Ferrario Freres, Patrizio Travagli, Tanja Pak, Nicola Toffolini, Fabrizio Rivola, Claudia Vollert, Stasa Celigoi, and Itzoc Prosen.
Nicola Toffolini, from Udine, author of "Un metro quadro di chiassose cicale nella sezione verticale di un campo di grano" and Fabrizio Rivola, from Imola, author of "Illuminazioni" received special mention for merit.
The TARGETTI ART LIGHT AWARD, which was organised thanks to the collaboration of ArteFiera 2000 and the Pecci Museum of Prato, was promoted by Targetti Sankey SpA, one of the leading architectural lighting companies in Europe, with seventy years' experience in the field. The initiative is addressed to young people under 35 years of age and is part of its policy of promotion of the culture of light. The artists have been asked to present a project and complete a work of art using electric light as a tool and main content. In the respect of a few basic rules, the participants were allowed to use any material and any light technology. They could also consult specialised engineers at Targetti in order to optimise light's expressive potential in their works.
The three prize-winning "light pictures" are now part of the Targetti Art Light Collection, an art collection whose common denominator is the use of artificial light.
The art director of the competition is Amnon Barzel, ex-first curator of the Pecci Museum in Prato. The panel of judges is made up of Amnon Barzel, Omar Calabrese (rector of Santa Maria della Scala), Bruno CorĂ (art director of the Pecci Museum), Anna Detheridge (from "Il Sole 24 ore"), Lorand Hegyi (director of the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien), Maurizio Mazzotti (manager of Arte Fiera), and Paolo Targetti (Chairman of Targetti Sankey Spa).
After showing the three prize-winning works at ArteFiera, the ten works that were admitted to the final selection will be exhibited at the Pecci Museum in Prato.
