RUSSIA IN LIGHT
On show at the MUAR of Moscow, from June first until the 25th of July,
more than 40 light and art installations by Targetti
A city where in summer the sun never seems to set and even the Metro stations are surprising hymns to light is the next stop on the schedule of the traveling exhibition that since 1988 has been showing the magic of Light Art at museums and art galleries all around the world.
The stage for Targetti’s Russian debut is the Shchusev National Museum of Architecture, internationally known as MUAR. Held in high esteem for the quality of its exhibitions (among the most recent, those dedicated to Isozaki, Boltanski, and the Russian avant-garde movements) of both architecture and photography, MUAR is distinguished by the strongly interdisciplinary nature of its exhibition activities, which combine the arts and techniques that define the world of space and urban design. And for this very reason, the museum’s director, David Sarkysian, invited Targetti to exhibit the works in the Targetti Light Collection, result of a well-informed and well-researched crossover between the worlds of light, contemporary art, and architecture, in the majestic rooms of the main Palace and the suggestive spaces of the Ruined Annex.
With the aim of illustrating the close creative relationship among these disciplines, alongside the light works in the Targetti collection (by now one of the world’s most important in the field of Light Art thanks to the collaboration of such masters as Olafur Eliasson, Gilberto Zorio, Fabrizio Plessi, and James Turrell), we will also be seeing two installations created especially for this event by two “archistars” who have always been active also as artists. One is the enfant prodige of Russian architecture Andrei Savin (who at just a tad over 45 is one of Russia’s most famous designers) and Alexander Brodski, unanimously considered a true master of theoretical architectural thought. Brodski (who in September will be the protagonist at the Russian Pavilion at the Biennale of Venice), besides creating a work for the collection will also be supervising staging of its exhibition, for which he has developed a fascinating exhibition concept.
The exhibition will be inaugurated on June first and will remain open to the public until 25 July.
