A discreet lighting approach for an immersive narrative environment
The Schengen Museum in Luxembourg and the renewed Prinzessin Marie-Astrid Europa boat reinterpret one of the most significant moments in European history through an immersive exhibition experience centred on the concept of “border”, exploring its evolution, symbolic meaning and impact on relationships between peoples across Europe and beyond. At the heart of the exhibition, the legacy of the Schengen Agreement becomes the lens through which broader themes of connection, identity and mobility are explored.
Curated by Migliore+Servetto in collaboration with Karmachina, the exhibition design combines multimedia environments, historical artefacts and multisensory installations into a layered narrative intertwining political, cultural and human dimensions.

The lighting scheme was developed to address a broad range of exhibition and environmental requirements. Supporting both the architectural and curatorial concept, compact OZ system spotlights were selected for the museum galleries as well as for the renewed exhibition spaces aboard the Europa boat, which also host temporary exhibitions.

The fixtures’ compact dimensions enabled discreet integration within the architecture, minimizing visual impact while preserving the spatial clarity of the interiors. At the same time, precise beam control and visual comfort make it possible to highlight artefacts, graphic displays and interpretative elements with accuracy, ensuring visual consistency and clear reading hierarchies.

The lighting concept extends to the Europa boat — the historic site where the Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985 — where the intervention required a careful balance between historical identity and contemporary museographic needs. Lighting was conceived to respect the original character of the spaces while providing the flexibility needed to accommodate temporary exhibitions, events and immersive content.
