New illumination of the Tower of Pisa with Targetti's lighting system
July, XX 2016 - Targetti illuminates the leaning tower of Pisa, along with the Duomo (cathedral), the Battistero (baptistery), the Camposanto monumentale (cemetery) and the Museo delle Sinopie (Sinopie Museum). The lighting, used on only a few symbolic occasions, was turned on again this year, as is the tradition, on the patron saint's feast day known as Luminara di San Ranieri, held on the evening of June, 16th.
The lighting is the culmination of extensive restoration work that has been completed both on the structure of the tower and its marble exterior, which has finally been brought back to its former glory, coordinated by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana and overseen by the Soprintendenza per i beni architettonici, paesaggistici e monumentali (Superintendence for architectural, landscaping and monumental assets).
As with sunlight, the resulting effect provides a clever contrast between light and shadow, in line with the play of solids and voids that is characteristic of the tower, to clearly display the designs of each sequence and arch. The light is modulated and distributed with precision, so as to evenly illuminate each floor; the tone is consistent with the lighting of the other monuments in the square. The result is spectacular and gives, to the most famous tower in the world, the identity it deserves even in the dark. The interior of each floor is surrounded by LED strips, housed in special aluminum profiles provided with an opal screen, capable of diffusing the light softly. The use of LED's has permitted the provision of a lighting system that's characterized by low visual impact, low consumption and reduced maintenance.
