Targetti behind the new lighting for 27 side chapels
The unique expertise of Targetti in the field of using light to enhance art is behind the new lighting system in the fascinating side chapels in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Building on the know-how acquired over the years in the field of lighting works of art Targetti had the privilege of being selected to light the 27 side chapels in the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. As an integral part of a project to renovate the internal lighting in the cathedral which started back in 2011 as part of events to celebrate its 850 years, Targetti developed the project with the valuable collaboration of the lighting designer Armand Zadikian. This important project for Targetti is history repeating itself given that twenty years ago they lit up the external Cathedral doors by installing recessed projectors that are still in perfect working order today.

Modernise the lighting and enhance the inside of the cathedral
To enhance and at the same time preserve all the historical and artistic heritage on display inside the Cathedral: this was the aim of the study that started a few years ago as part of the general restoration project on one of the most important symbols of the city of Paris that first focused on the heart of Notre-Dame and then moved onto the side chapels. The latter are now fitted with new lighting designed by Targetti and selected by Armand Zadikian to welcome the millions of visitors that cross its threshold and to ensure excellent levels of lighting and luminance ratios for the television cameras that transmit mass every week from the cathedral. "The original lighting that was installed years ago was no longer suitable for current expectations and needs. The use of outdated and miscellaneous materials together with a lack of light made it difficult to see the works on display and the lighting was too low for the television cameras that transmit services regularly inside the cathedral” explained Armand Zadikian.

The choice of the LEDÒ projector: a clean, minimal range
Targetti LED LEDÒ adjustable projectors were chosen to light the works of art inside the chapels. The type of installation is the same for every chapel and consists of vertical tracks equipped with black projectors with an elegant and discreet matte finish. The result is a highly versatile installation that makes it possible to vary the position of the fixtures along the vertical track and a flexible optical system – ranging from spot to very wide flood optics and the possibility to dim individual fixtures according to needs. The high quality LED lamps the LEDO’ projectors are fitted with have excellent colour rendering and protect the paintings from the risks of photo-damage. "I was familiar with the Targetti range and after careful selection I chose the product that met the project needs. We needed a sober and discreet product that could blend into the architecture of the cathedral without compromising the historical setting”, explained Armand Zadikian.

Adjustable light intensity
One hundred works of art were lit using the LED technology in the 96 projectors that were installed. Maximum power was chosen for all LED lamps and the lumen output for every single chapel was set personally by Armand Zadikian. "In addition to having excellent colour rendering and clean precise beams the main advantage of LEDO’ is the possibility to dim the light intensity. Seeing as all the chapels are different thanks to the Targetti optics I was able to adjust the emission depending on the works of art to be lit taking into account the size, colour and finishes…” added Armand Zadikian.

Proven experience in lighting architectural heritage
Lighting the chapels inside Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is the beginning of a new partnership between Targetti and Armand Zadikian, who was also involved in developing the lighting systems in the Paris churches of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Notre-Dame-de- Lorette during restoration work on both of them.

The new lighting was inaugurated on Wednesday 20 September in the presence of Monsignor Chauvet, rector of Notre-Dame cathedral and Armand Zadikian the lighting designer behind the project, and 180 special guests who had the chance to see the new lighting during a private guided tour of the cathedral.
