The New Uffizi Gallery, a new lighting system designed by Targetti. After restoring the Tribuna, the next stage of the Nuovi Uffizi project involves the historical gallery of the famous museum with restoration and adaptation work on the halls dedicated to the exhibition of works of art by 14th century Italian artists. Five halls on the first corridor adjacent to the Tribuna, ornately decorated with vaulted ceilings and marble doorways, from today will house Italian paintings from the late fourteenth century.
The particular architectural and decorative features of the halls immediately influenced the choice of lighting for the project so as not to interfere with the conservation of the walls and decorative structure. The restoration which not only involved work on the masonry also includes modernising the building including the lighting system and ventilation. The lighting system needed to make the most of the space available and the works of art on display and integrate into the infrastructure by making as little impact as possible.
Targetti, under the guidance of lighting designer Massimo Iarussi, created a particular ad hoc system with a triple function: house the wiring to reduce traces in the wall to a minimum, light the hall and the works of art on display and act as a “picture-hanging bar”. A linear system in extruded aluminium was created installed overhanging the wall equipped with two different sequences of the latest generation, high colour rendering LED sources. The first to light the works on display is fitted with optical lenticular lenses for uniform lighting of the entire wall where the paintings are hung. The second lights the space in a diffused and reflective way, lighting the vaulted ceilings with an extremely soft light. All the sources are screened and the two lines of light are controlled and dimmed separately by a DALI system in order to adjust the intensity depending on the needs of the different halls. Once again Targetti experience and know-how at the service of prestigious works of art.
