Photo: ?The Great Santiago tower with its 300 metres in height is the highest structure ever built in Latin and South America and has become a landmark on the Santiago skyline. The tower, designed by the architect Cesar Pelli in collaboration with the Chilean architectural firm Alemparte Barreda Wedeles Besançon, is part of the Costanera Center, a complex that covers an area of 47.000m² which includes, apart from the tower, a shopping centre and another three towers that house offices, supermarkets, shops, restaurants, 2 five-star hotels, a heliport, an aerial garden, a medical centre and free time facilities.
The building was designed entirely according to sustainable design criteria: from the construction process to the choice of materials as well as the design of the external walls. Water distribution, the air conditioning system and all plant facilities are managed using “green technology” with the double advantage of contributing to environmental conservation and to reducing operating and maintenance costs of the building itself. The same “eco-friendly” logic, the efficient use of electrical power and low maintenance requirements were also of fundamental importance for the lighting project and the choice of fixtures to be used which were supplied largely by Targetti. Other elements that were taken into consideration included visual comfort for users: the thousands of people who frequent the complex spaces every day, and the aesthetic appeal of the new architectural icon in the city of Santiago.
The use of recessed CCTLED downlights for the communal areas on the 70 floors of the tower made it possible to obtain a low power density equal to 7.2W/m² (almost 50% less than the level required for LEED certification) and ensures more than 50,000 hours of life which in the case of this building means more than ten years operation without any maintenance. The same attention was paid to the quality aspects of the lighting project: the breadth of the range and the great versatility of CCT LED guarantee excellent lighting uniformity and a comfortable lighting atmosphere even in areas with different heights such as the large entrance hall.
