The “Salam” Emergency Center (named after the Arabic word for “peace”), is the only hospital in Africa specializing in heart surgery that is able to offer excellent free treatment to the three hundred million inhabitants living in an area of ten million square kilometers. For Studio tamassociati, the realization of this project was, most importantly, a chance to reflect on the profound meaning of rights – particularly, the right to health – as a necessary premise for building a culture of justice, equality and peaceful cohabitation.
With these principles in mind, the team from the Venice-based firm set to work by conceiving the center as a beautiful and hospitable domestic environment where the patient, nearly always the victim of poverty and war, is perceived not just as the subject of a treatment process, but an individual able to exercise the fundamental rights that the inhabitants of this continent are all too often denied. The same values inspired the illumination design project, providing the hospital in Khartoum with a lighting system that meets the highest Western standards in terms of efficiency as well as energy savings and design quality. Targetti supplied all the lighting fixtures, being involved also in the outdoor lighting of the centre. We mention among other products the in-ground fixtures ICARE and PHENIX, and EDEN, a direct radial light fixture characterized by high solidity and resistance.
