Complex restoration work has returned Rome’s historic Palazzo dell’Apollinaire, since 1990 the home of the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce (Pontifical University of the Holy Cross), to its original splendor. The project was ferried to completion by the RHL Architettura design studio, whose team also oversaw crucial aspects of the architectural lighting of the complex. The inner courtyard of the Palazzo, which was almost totally rebuilt in the eighteenth century by the architect Ferdinando Fuga, immediately reveals the project philosophy, which targeted subdued valorization of the Baroque details of the building in full respect of the original architecture.
In-ground recessed lighting fixtures of the MERCURE range and LINEOS linear projectors on the first string-course – both equipped with T16 fluorescent light sources – ‘wash’ the walls with a soft, elegant light. Another feather-touch of light bathes the beautiful fountain on the left, creating an effect akin to flowing water. The product used in this case is NEPTUNE, a professional recessed projector for under water installations equipped with dichroic halogen lamp. The overall effect is impressive, tightly focused and eschewing excess, that subtracts the Palazzo from the oppressive obscurity that characterized it for so many years prior to the recent restoration.
